Light in the Darkness

Today is the day that is known as Halloween or All Hallows Eve. Over the years it has meant different things to different people. As I wonder around the shops it seems that scary, dark and gruesome costumes and decoration adorn every entrance. There isn't any way to ignore it so the only option a christian is to shine light in the darkness. As a church we offer a Halloween alternative 'The Night Of Light' this is open to every child from 0-18, our message, Jesus is the light of the world. On the surface it looks like a glow in the dark roller disco with uv lights and hot dogs, but look deeper and you will see love shining from all around, we sit the children down and talk to them about the fact the Christians believe that Jesus is the light of the world. That even the smallest amount of light can chase away darkness.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

John 8:12

It can be really hard for children to stand up for what they believe in especially if it means going against the flow. From what I see it is getting harder and harder and when most people look at Halloween as a 'bit of fun' I think it is important for us to be fully equipped. I had children coming up to me at school and in our after school clubs saying the the adverts on television were giving them nightmares but they were to scared to say something incase they were made fun of.

There are alternatives such as light parties, I have also heard stories of children going to halloween parties but dressed as positive things, this is fab.

World Vision have a campaign called pumpkin heroes. This focuses on a pumpkin character wanting to shine Gods light to all around, to have a hope filled Halloween. There are different activities, and resources to help with an alternative to Halloween. Click here for more. We are also giving out the Bags Of Hope at our light party.

You may have heard of The Meaningful Chocolate Company. They produce the real easter egg and the real advent calendar. This year they have put together the meaningful treat box which provides a bag of chocolate buttons with a poster inside with a message of light. Why not calve a heart in a pumpkin outside your house and give these out to trick or treaters. Maybe, just maybe it might plant a mustard seed in a family who receives this gift. You can find out more here.

Please let me know if I can ever help in any way, if you or any of your children have questions to do with Halloween or anything else drop me a message children@smlpoole.org.uk or come and see me in church.
